Presentation

The social welfare worker carries out his or her work mainly in caring for non-self-sufficient patients, either at the user's home or in social welfare facilities. He or she deals with the material and affective care needs, from hygiene care, nutrition, and living environment, of individuals in a situation of severe distress (mainly disabled, non-self-sufficient elderly, individuals with mental distress, problematic minors, and drug addicts), tending to promote their autonomy and self-determination and to improve their relationship with the environment. Collaborates with other professionals in the health and social services area: doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, educators, psychologists. Carries out his or her work in the user's home or in social welfare facilities, as an employee, independently or, not infrequently, in cooperative form.

The socio-assistance worker (OSA) is employed in a wide variety of settings, ranging from social welfare and social-health services, both in residential and semiresidential facilities, to direct care in the user's home. This professional figure is crucial within hospital settings, nursing homes, day care centers, and private homes, where he or she plays a crucial role in supporting individuals of all ages, particularly the elderly, disabled, or people with temporary or permanent frailty.

The duties of the FBO encompass a wide range of activities: from direct personal assistance, which includes help with daily activities such as feeding, personal hygiene, and movement, to domestic and hotel support, which involves the management of household chores, meal preparation, and maintenance of the user's living environments. In addition, the caregiver is often involved in social hygiene and sanitation interventions, contributing to the physical and psychological well-being of the assisted persons, always respecting their dignity and autonomy.

A multidisciplinary approach and the ability to work as part of a team with other health and social professionals are key competencies for the FBO, who plays an essential role in ensuring a better quality of life for users, promoting their well-being, social inclusion and autonomy.
