Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality, morbidity and disability in industrialized countries. The leading cause is atherosclerosis whose major risk factors are divided into modifiable, partially modifiable and non-modifiable. If nothing we can about the risk related to the patient's age, gender, family and personal history, much we can about all that is modifiable diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipemia, obesity and unhealthy lifestyle. Knowing the risk factors and knowing the new drugs that science makes available to us to modify them will help us in managing our patients and reducing their cardiovascular risk.
